This weekend, some good eatin’ for a good cause as the Rome Noon Optimist Club holds its 63rd annual “Flipping for Youth” pancake breakfast.
The event is Saturday from 6 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the Rome Civic Center on Jackson Hill.
Money raised helps the Optimist Club fund other organizations geared toward youth in Rome and Floyd County, such as The Foundation Camp, Summit Quest, Cops for Kids, and the summer reading program at the library.
The Optimist Club also has its own programs, according to Scott Moody.
“We do a high school student of the month,” he said. “All our schools in Rome and Floyd County, public and private, they are there. We do a middle school student of the semester and a “Terrific Kids” banquet for our fourth and fifth-graders. So, we hit elementary, middle, and high schools with our student recognition programs.”
Other programs include a speech contest for area students.
“We have an essay contest, and for the hard of hearing kinds, of course, Georgia School for the Deaf has that, we do that contest. We provide prize money for our winners and then they move on. Then, as they move up, we provide more financial support. If they win the district competition, it’s a $2,500 scholarship.
Tickets are $8 in advance and $9 at the door, The Optimist Club’s world-famous sausage is also on sale for $6 a pound.
The pancake breakfast coincides with the Rome Noon Optimist Club’s 75th anniversary.
