The Rome Alcohol Control Commission has given its approval for a designated Sunday for alcohol sales in 2025.

Under state law, establishments that sell alcohol on Sundays must meet a 50-50 food-to-drink ratio. However, cities can designate one Sunday a year to allow businesses that do not meet that requirement to serve.

In 2023, the Rome City Commission designated New Year’s Eve as that one Sunday.

In 2024, it was St. Patrick’s Day.

For 2025, the Rome Alcohol Control Commission is recommending Super Bowl Sunday, which is February 9.

City Clerk Joe Smith told the ACC Monday that there are no other holidays or events on a Sunday next year, so Super Bowl Sunday is really the only choice.

The recommendation is now expected to go to the full Rome City Commission for approval.

Also Monday, the ACC approved new beer, wine, and liquor package licenses at  Square Spirits and Extra Mile, both at 672 Braves Boulevard, as well as a beer and wine package license at EZ Stop at 2121 Shorter Avenue and a wine wholesale license at Wholesale Beverage at 18 Old Airport Road.
