Pepperell Middle School fifth-grader Ella Craver correctly spelled “Sumerian” to win the Floyd County Schools’ Spelling Bee Wednesday morning at the Floyd County Board of Education.
Eight Floyd County students put their spelling skills to the test in the annual competition sponsored by the Floyd County Chapter of the Georgia Association of Educators (GAE). Model Middle School seventh-grader Eva Singh won second place and both will represent FCS at the GAE Region 1 Spelling Bee on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at Georgia Highlands College Lakeview Building.
Each elementary and middle school sent its school-level winner and/or alternate to the FCS’ Spelling Bee in hopes of taking home the title and a chance to advance to the regional competition. Students in grades 4-8 are eligible for the competition. Lasting for less than a half-hour, the bee was short and included tricky words like “animatronics,” “incandescent,” “bilge,” and “insolent.”
FCS Superintendent Dr. Glenn White welcomed the audience and spellers, then Spelling Bee Coordinator and Literacy Specialist Dr. Tabatha Tierce introduced the pronouncer of words, Dr. Brittany Phinazee. She then read the rules and explained the process of the bee.

Model Elementary: Corban Abernathy (4th)
Model Middle: Eva Singh (7th)
Pepperell Middle: Ella Craver (5th), Danny Wilson (7th)
