Floyd County is looking at a possible new ordinance to address the issue of stray animals in the county.

Public Animal Welfare Services Director Katy Walters told the county public safety committee on Thursday that the stray population has exploded, adding there were 73 calls in July alone.

“We are currently working on a new spay-neuter ordinance or animal alteration ordinance for Floyd County,” she said. “We are also looking into some different avenues we can take as far as pickup up strays, and working together to try and alleviate some of the issues that we’ve been having for the last few years.”

Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord said the hope is to have some sort of proposal ready for the public safety committee in September.

Meanwhile, Walters said that she recently attended the Best Friends Animal Society’s National Conference in Houston.

“We got a lot of good information from there that and we are hoping that we will be able to implement some of that here also,” she said. “We just keep making improvements.”

Walters added that PAWS has seen an increase in adoptions since the implementation of extended hours.

There were 27 adoptions in July and the shelter maintained its 95 percent live outcome.
