Staff reports

Highway 140 near Buttram Road was closed for more than an hour Thursday following a tractor-trailer wreck and fire.

According to Rome Fire Department Battalion Chief Brad Beall, the rig with an enclosed trailer left the roadway and entered a construction site.

“The truck struck some piping and equipment,” he said. “It caused pretty extensive damage to the truck and the fuel tanks. The fuel got on the damaged engine and started a fire. The fire was mainly comprised of diesel fuel and it did burn the tractor and a large portion of the trailer up.

The driver told firefighters that the bright sun had hampered his vision.

He and his wife, who are from out of state, were able to get out and were not seriously injured.

However, their two dogs perished.

No one else was hurt.

Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles.

The wreck occurred at around 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
